My French Lookbook
Location: Haut-de-Cagnes, Cagnes-sur-Mer |
I love the anticipation of a holiday: planning a stylish selection of outfits for all scenarios, trying to squash as many clothes as I can into a small space, realising my bursting suitcase will never be accepted onto the plane and going through the hard decision of which items should be discarded. Picking looks for the South of France was especially difficult as I knew the sophisticated architecture and stunning colours would drastically overshadow my wardrobe. I thought I'd share the outfits I decided to bring on my French holiday and document the beautiful locations we visited.
French Stripes
Monte-Carlo, Monaco
I had to include a piece of striped clothing in my wardrobe, if not for cliché sake then for easy achievable chic. This outfit consists of a £1 dress from a Bristol charity shop, simple brown sandals and a silk bandana to add a pop of colour to the outfit and jazz up my hairstyle.
The Versatile Silk Handkerchief
Musée Renoir |
What was once my mum's silk scarf is now a favourite and unique top of mine. The rich purple and floral pattern makes this an interesting accent piece and works really well when styled with denim shorts or my plaid skater skirt (another charity shop purchase).
The Pink Beach Dress
This is technically a nightdress, but the breathable fabrics of leisurewear can be the perfect choice for a hot climate. I chose to throw this pink mini dress over my bikini before heading to the bar after a day on the beach, and the lace gives a little elegant detail to the simplistic garment.
The Vintage Orange Dress
I bought this '70s piece from a pop-up vintage shop in Cornwall, and it has become my go-to choice for a smart casual evening. The retro fabric buttons and knee-length skater skirt in a silky, orange fabric make this an eye-catching look that unintentionally matched my piña colada.
The Tangerine Orange Short Dungarees
Musée Matisse |
A spur of the moment purchase from an Instagram website that took months to arrive, but was worth the wait and is surprisingly easy to style! I chose a simple, striped vest to accentuate the vibrancy of the dungarees; I find orange is an underrated colour for complimenting a golden tan.
Clean White Linen
| ||
I thought I’d include a piece with a higher price tag for more formal evenings out. The simple elegance of the White Company linen with a clean-cut V neckline and a delicate lace trim oozes sophistication. My orange sandals are unapologetically purchased from M&S and add a pop of colour that becomes the focal point of the outfit. Although, linen creases easily and is not travel friendly unless you have an iron at hand.
The Emerald Green Evening Dress
This dress is a perfect combination of peasant and princess with the details of the little bow in matching fabric, puffed shoulders and a delicate floral pattern. The emerald green maxi dress also complements my suede, pink sandals that were another bargain from M&S. I stole the dress from my mum's wardrobe and I don't plan on returning it anytime soon!
Mamma Mia Flared Fantasy
I tried to pick outfits to reflect the colours of the sun-washed, chalky chalets in Nice, and my mint green, strapless dress, fortunately, matched the beautifully faded French shutters in Haut-de-Cagnes. I can live out my Mamma Mia fantasies with my swishy flared sleeves that are a perfect fusion of the retro sixties and Greek-style peasant chic.
We did, of course, respect all travel advice and made sure to wear face masks on all public transport and on entering every shop.
Despite being an unusual travel experience under the circumstances, travelling in the South of France has been my favourite trip to Europe yet! I would happily live here, unfortunately, my bank balance does not agree.
Au revoir!
